A 'Reference Building' Approach to Building Energy Performance Standard for Single-Family Residences

The Department of Energy is currently developing building energy performance etandards (BEPS) that are intended to significantly reduce the design energy requirements of new buildings. This report provides a modified approach to the DoE BEPS development pro¬gram for residential buildings. The modidled BEPS are not meant to replace component performance standards for net;buildings but rather to augment them so that design tradeoffs can be made at the whole building level if they can be shown not to increase design energy requirements.nIn the modified approach, equivalence must be demonstrated between the thermal perfor¬mance of a proposed building design and a reference building design of the same type and size and in the same geographic location
