The contract process has become increasingly important in the selection of centers to participate in multicenter clinical trials. The use of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to solicit center participation and contracts to provide funding are described and compared to the grant process. The implications with respect to coordinating centers are discussed. Recommendations are made to sponsors of clinical trials, to respondents to RFPs, and to reviewers of proposals.
