Archeological Investigation of the Lock Gates in Lock Number 1, Patowmack Canal, Great Falls, Virginia

The examination of the northern lock gate in the downstream gate pocket of Lock 1 of the Patowmack Canal at Great Falls, Virginia, provided, data on the frame-and-plank construction of the gate. Projections for the dimensions and weight of the remains of the gate set are included to facilitate planned removal of the lock gates from their out-of-doors location. The investigation was conducted from August 4-8, 1980. It sought to determine the extent and condition of the remains of the downstream gates in Lock 1 of the Patowmack Canal system.
