Urban Environmental Design: Perspectives and Sources

摘要

This collection comprises of essays on planning and organizational aspects of urban environmental design as part of the Urban Environmental Design Project's report, intended to advise local governments on how they can most effectively organize and administer activities bearing on the quality of urban environment. The concept is discussed in terms of trends that are broadening the context of design activity toward interaction with other pursuits such as economic development and the involvement of nongovernment citizen groups, particularly significant with the shift to localism, decentralized control, and recognition of the unique resources of existing structures and places. Papers discuss the emerging urban environmental design efforts. Effectiveness of urban environmental design is demonstrated by the case of Boston, Mass., and questions are raised for evaluating local design administrations. An annotated bibliography with over 100 citations is appended.
