Effectiveness of Advanced EMTS versus Basic EMTS: Executive Summary

The focus of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Basic Emergency Medical Technicians versus the advanced EMT's (paramedics) in the pre-hospital care provided to patients with acute cardiovascular conditions. Process measures studied were symptom recognition and appropriate treatment. Outcome measures were survivorship through hospital admission and long term survivorship. Results of the study reported survivorship is related to a short response time and paramedic care. Ambulance utilization for males and females ages 45-64 decreases mortality. Experience is the major factor in correctly diagnosing patients with AIHD. Target population for community education programs on the utilization of the EMS system is the 45-64 age group.
