Determination of the Products of the Oxidative Thermal Degradation of Variously Treated Woods and Mine Materials

The objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazards of variously treated mine materials compared with virgin or untreated compositions under conditions approximating those likely to be encountered in underground mines. An apparatus was designed and constructed that was capable of simulating varying conditions of temperature, flow, atmosphere with provision for accommodating varying sample thicknesses, total and intermittent product collection, and continuous parameter monitoring. Toxic load assessments were obtained for all of the test conditions. The fire hazards presented by the conveyor belts were higher than that of the NCS-treated woods; toxic hazards were comparable.
