The Development of PVC-Modified Tars for Use in Surface Treatments

In this bulletin an account is given of the development of and research into the use of PVC/tar in surface treatments in South Africa. The strategic and economic aspects of the use of indigenous coal tars are outlined and it is shown that in surface treatments considerable savings can be effected provided that the durability of the tar can be improved. The prime objective of adding PVC to tar is to improve the durability. The nature of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its effects on the properties of coke-oven tar are outlined. Apparatus and techniques specially developed to study these properties and also the compatibility of PVC with coke-oven tar are described. Production aspects are considered and formulations for the production of very low-volatile PVC-modified tars are given.
