Research on Permanent Cropping Systems and Related Equipment for Small-Scale Farms

This report summarizes an investigation of the processes and equipment that are essential to a more stable and sustainable agriculture. It also identifies the most critical gaps in the market availability of equipment scaled to the needs of small-scale farmers who are trying to implement a more resource-preserving and self-sufficient agriculture. In addition to improved access to appropriate equipment technology, the study affirms that small-scale farmers need to improve their understanding of and confidence in cropping and cultural practices that contribute to the natural processes operating within a balanced soil-plant community. Potential commercial applications of this research include the production of small-scale equipment for forage harvesting, seeding of grasses and legumes, and cultivating row crops on vegetable and mixed farms.
