Use of Medium Chain Triglycerides in Infant Foods

The document is an edited summary of a conference on medium chain triglycerides (MCT) held October 5, 1979. MCTs have advantages over long-chain triglycerides in terms of digestion, absorption, and metabolic fate. MCTs are of clinical use for digestion/absorptive defects, diabetes, hyperlipemia, and seizures. Infant tolerance is variable. A 40% formula appears to have short term advantages over long-chain triglycerides for fat absorption, nitrogen retention, and early growth. There is no indication for MCT feeding of normal infants, or for clinical conditions where MCT may only have theoretical advantages.
