摘要

At least two distinct groups occupied the El Portal area in prehistoric times. The earliest, called the Crane Flat Complex, may have been in El Portal as early as 1200 BC. The second group, thought to be ancestors of the Southern Sierra Miwok, probably entered the area about AD 1250. The chapter in the report dealing with Native American occupation looks at early and late occupation, grave locations and includes personal sketches of early historic figures. The Anglo occupation of El Portal is presented by looking at biographies of 6 early Anglo residents. The locations of several Anglo graves are also discussed. Anglo activities included the Yosemite Valley Railroad, the El Portal Stage Line, the Del Portal Hotel, the Yosemite Lumber Co., the Portland Cement Co., and barium mining.
