Approach to Policy Evaluation in the Egyptian Agricultural Sector: Simulation of Egyptian Village Economy

In light of constant or even declining yields, rapid population growth, the government's orientation toward accelerated economic development, and many other stressful factors, it is essential that Egypt's agricultural productivity be revitalized. The key to success seems to lie in redesigning the system of incentives and institutions, but such a solution requires detailed knowledge of the agricultural sector. To help answer this need is the Village Simulation Project (VSP): a microeconomic model of an Egyptian village economy that can be used to investigate the impact of alternative agricultural price and food rationing policies and the effects of technological and institutional change on the distribution of income, consumption patterns, and levels of production.
