Changes in Hemoglobins during Transformation in the Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus)

Changes in hemoglobin synthesis take place when the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) undergoes transformation from a sedentary, burrowed larval form to a free-swimming, parasitic adult. The larval hemoglobins slowly disappear and are replaced by adult proteins. Using electrophoretic techniques, the sequence of these changes was followed. The levels of each hemoglobin before and after transformation and the relative electrophoretic mobilities were determined.
