A rigorous theory of the propagation of surface-wave modes along a radially inhomogeneous, uniaxially anisotropic optical waveguide is presented. The resulting two-point boundary value problem is solved numerically using a shooting method. Dispersion curves are obtained for the lower order modes of three different fibers. In addition, we have computed the phase delay, group time delay, pulse width broadening and field distributions of the fundamental mode. In order to attain a relatively small change in these quantities, it appears that rather strong anisotropies are needed. Several analytical results pertaining to the step-index fiber and a graded-index fiber with a quadratic permittivity profile are included.
