Safety Information Profile Oil and Gas Field Operations

Safety and health hazards for workers involved in oil and gas field operations are reviewed. The review is limited to land drilling operations from exploration to the storage of crude products in stock tanks in the field. The different types of operations are described, and the hazards associated with each are discussed. The size of the industry and the occupations at risk are documented. Current technology for controlling the hazards is reviewed. Accident statistics and case studies are presented to illustrate the frequency of occurrence and the severity of the hazards. Also included are listings of applicable Standard Industrial Classification codes, major firms involved in oil and gas field operations, and applicable existing codes and regulations. Technical innovations and advancements currently taking place in oil and gas field operations are described. The authors conclude that information in the safety information profile can be used by NIOSH in determining research priorities and by safety professionals and other involved in protecting the health and safety of oil and gas field workers.
