Petroleum Refinery Workers Exposure to PAHs at Fluid Catalytic Cracker, Coker, and Asphalt Processing Units

A study of worker exposure to polyaromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three different types of process units monitored at nine petroleum refineries is discussed. Over 250 personal, area, and refinery upwind boundary samples were collected and analyzed for 23 PAHs or groups of PAHs. Mean PAH concentrations in personal samples ranged from 0.4 to 236.6 micrograms per cubic meter (cu m) and the average number of PAHs per sample at concentrations of 0.6 to 1,347 micrograms/cu m. Upwind samples contained 0 to 13 different PAHs at concentrations of 0 to 1.3 micrograms/cu m.
