摘要

There were two primary research goals sought during the first year of work on this project: (1) Photoacoustic spectroscopy utilizing pulsed laser excitation in the ultraviolet was evaluated as a technique for detecting aldehydes at concentrations of a ppm (or lower) in total pressures of an atmosphere of air. (2) Experimental variations of pulsed photoacoustic spectroscopy were studied in an effort to optimize the detectability limits and linearity of response for monitoring acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. Possibly, the most important accomplishment has been a general understanding of how pulsed photoacoustic detection of aldehydes can be performed with great sensitivity and a high degree of linearity.
