Guidelines for Safe Maintenance Practices in Petroleum Refineries, Volume 1, Chapters 1-5

The guidelines for safety in maintenance practices in petroleum refineries are reviewed. National and international standards are compared and correlated to OSHA standards. The functions of a work authorization plan are discussed. The specific areas in which research is needed are discussed. The case histories of all accidents and near misses in the refinery industry are included. The author recommends that studies be conducted on an improved accident reporting system that is available to NIOSH which contains sufficient information to determine accident causes, and on a standard of safe practices for hydroblasting.
