摘要

Results are presented of a study to determine how and under what conditions complexation influences the adsorptive behavior of lead at the solid-solution interface. Previous work by other investigators on lead removal by adsorption from aqueous solutions is reviewed and the toxicity of lead is discussed. Also noted is the theoretical basis for ionic equilibria calculation essential to adsorption data interpretation. The results of lead adsorption onto three solids in the presence of ligands including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, and glycine are reported. The effect of silicon/aluminum ratio, metal ligand ratio, temperature, and the presence of major cations on lead adsorption are considered. In the absence of ligands, the adsorption of lead is significantly affected by the silicon/aluminum ratio of the solids. However, with ligands present, the adsorption is dependent on the ligand/metal ratio.
