This report is concerned with the integration of different areas of engineering practice and research in the field of the reliability and lifetime prediction of structures. A systematic, general procedure is suggested for a probability based evaluation of this reliability/lifetime of structures, physical models which can be used in such an analysis and numerical aspects of the methods will be discussed. Attention is also paid to the interpretational and economic aspects of probabilities. In order to catalogue lifetime evaluation methods, a checklist is presented which enables the identification of potentially dangerous factors. Finally, the problem of more than a single failure mode is considered together with a discussion of possible numerical techniques to attack these problems.
