Specific chemical interactions between heavy metals and solid particulates in the presence of chelating agents are examined. The absorption of metal ions onto hydrous solids in the presence of organic chelating agents is shown to be extremely complicated. Factors influencing the extent of adsorption include the stability of a metal-ligand chelate, the solubility of the solid adsorbent, and the competition between more than one metal per solution for the ligand. Interactions between zinc and aluminosilicates are discussed including the effect of specific chemical adsorption on colloidal stability.
