Studies Supporting the Evaluation of the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System Program Effects on the Consumer Marketplace

This report describes the results of several research activities designed to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its evaluation of the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQGS). The UTQG System provides consumers with comparison information on three performance characteristics: treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance. This program was intended to affect the tire marketplace by: (1) shifting consumer choices toward tires that best meet their needs; and (2) shifting manufacturer production towards safer and longer-wearing tires. An annotated summary report reviewed the type of data available on the tire industry structure and consumer behavior.
