Applications of remote water quality platforms at key locations in selected drainages are becoming increasingly important for water quality assessment. Testing was made of remote site-specific biosensing units for real-time water quality monitoring from cold water streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to a warm water site on the Tennessee Cumberland River. The designed sensors monitored fish respiratory responses. The sensors were interfaced to existing water quality monitoring stations equipped with remote microprocessor-controlled data collection platforms. Biological responses and physical parameters were transmitted from the stations to over-passing earth satellites which retransmitted the data to a central data collection and processing center.
