Environmental and personal breathing zone air samples were analyzed for n-hexane (110543) at Archer Daniels Midland (SIC-0119) in Decatur, Illinois on January 3 to 4, and October 20 to 22, 1980. An unspecified individual requested the evaluation on behalf of approximately 28 affected workers in the hexane extraction work areas. Seven hexane extraction operators and three maintenance workers were administered medical questionnaires. The authors conclude that a hazard from hexane exposure does not exist at this facility. They recommend methods to control hexane vapors exposures and to upgrade the respiratory protection and confined entry programs.
