Continuation of the Evaluation of the Immunogenicity and Characterization of the Immune Response to the Capsular Polysaccharides of Haemophilus Influenzae Type B, Escherichia Coli, and Group C Neisseria Meningitidis in Infants and Children

Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Medical Center has maintained the Research Reference Laboratory for Bacterial Meningitis in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. All were related to the evaluation of the immunogenicity and characterization of the immune response to the capsular polysaccharides of Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichiae coli and the prevention of bacterial meningitis in children. This report summarizes the project and data collected since 1970. The research laboratory for Bacterial Meningitis developed competency in the cultivation identification, and storage of bacteria causing acute meningitis in children as well as developing competency in the procedure of counter immunoelectrophoresis to identify the antigens of common bacteria producing meningitis in children.
