摘要

This study deals with one of the physical remains of the Russians' presence in Alaska. The bishop's house in Sitka is a rare, extant structure dating from the years when Sitka was called Novoarchangelsk and the promyshlenniks of the Russian-American fur company held sway in Alaska. Coming into the possession of the National Park Service in 1972 as part of Sitka National Historical Park, the restored bishop's house can serve well as a symbol of Russian colonization efforts in America. The report provides background information on the history of the first Russian explorers, fur-hunters, and entrepreneurs in the Alaska region which eventually led to the coming of the Missionaries. The Historic Structure Report section discusses the architectural features and plans for the structure which was constructed from 1843 to 1867. Ownership and the grounds are also discussed. The Furnishing Study covers the period of 1844 to 1867 as well as the 20th century. It is broken down into the various rooms and contains copies of the available registers and inventories.
