Digital Model of the Unconsolidated Aquifer System in the Modesto Area, Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties, California

A digital mathematical model of the unconsolidated alluvial aquifer system in the Modesto area has been developed which can be used to determine the effects of increased pumping and water use on future water levels in the aquifer system. The model is divided into two layers or units that represent the unconsolidated alluvial deposits in the area. The lower unit in the model, called unit 1, represents an aquifer that is both confined and unconfined depending on location. The aquifer is confined in the western part of the study area by a clay bed 20 to 100 feet thick. Elsewhere, the aquifer is unconfined.
