A Preliminary Evaluation of the System for Inventorying Road Surface Topography (SIRST)

The report gives a brief overview of a System for Inventorying Road Surface Topography (SIRST). A description of the operating principle is given as well as a description of the individual components. A preliminary evaluation of the system and its components is included, together with a discussion of the operating experience. It is concluded that the present system is usable; however, a more complete evaluation and further development are needed to adapt the system for highway department use. Several modifications are recommended for over-the-road environment and ease of calibration.
