摘要

The purpose of this project is to describe and evaluate available studies and information about the care and services provided to the chronic mentally ill who have transferred from state and county mental hospitals to community settings. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of nursing homes in caring for this deinstitutionalized population. The project is divided into five component parts: (1) a comprehensive state-of-the-art review and synthesis of available literature and data, (2) a survey of ongoing research and demonstration projects related to the deinstitutionalization process and the chronic mentally ill population, (3) the development of a conceptual framework and a descriptive model describing client/patient movement, (4) a secondary data analysis of the 1977 National Nursing Home Survey data and (5) recommendations for future research. Each of the major tasks address seven key issue areas; the deinstitutionalization process, the chronic mentally ill, the role of institutions, community-based care, the role of nursing homes, the placement process, and the appropriateness of placement. The final report provides a comprehensive descriptive analysis of those factors which influence the placement of the deinstitutionalized mentally ill.
