Test results are presented for the transport characteristics of an extensive range of geometrically similar model solids in a 100 mm diameter UPVC drain pipe. Model solids were based on commercially available sanitary towels (napkins) discharged into the pipe system via a series of U.K. standard watercloset (w.c.) types. Following a data fit analysis, relationships are presented linking solid transport characteristics to solid, pipe and w.c. parameters. These relationships, linked to observation of installed hospital drainage systems in the U.K., will allow laboratory test methods to be utilized in predicting the effect of design changes on system performance.
