Disposable in Vivo Potassium Electrode

A program was conducted to study and solve problems in the development of a disposable potassium ion-selective electrode (ISE) for clinical and industrial applications. In the pursuit of performance and cost effectiveness for in vitro and in vivo applications, the following criteria served as guidelines: substrate and membrane compositions, geometry, biocompatibility, sterilization, storage, calibration and the correlation with established methods. Miniature probes, flow cell and catheter mounted electrodes were fabricated and evaluated for a variety of clinical applications. Used with small, portable, battery-operated meters, these electrodes can be used to provide continuous or intermittent measurements of potassium in whole blood at bedside.
