U.S.S. CAIRO, Vicksburg National Military Park, Vicksburg, Mississippi: Architectural Study 1861-1980

This document describes the program for the preservation and display of the Civil War gunboat U.S.S. Cairo located at Vicksburg National Military Park. The analysis and recommendations in the following pages were first outlined for National Park Service management in an interim Cairo report in April 1979, at which time restoration alternative E was selected. The U.S.S. Cairo served Union forces for approximately 11 months, from January 1862 to December 1862, when she was sunk by a submerged Confederate torpedo in the Yazoo River near Vicksburg, Mississippi.
