Papers presented at a national symposium, sponsored by the University of Connecticut Alcohol Research Center and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), on the general notion of differential assessment as it applies to persons diagnosed as alcoholic, are provided under the following symposium session topics: (1) problems of quantification; (2) alcoholism and psychopathology; (3) alcoholic pedigree, sex differences, and the problem of risk; (4) behaviorial assessment of the alcoholic; (5) varieties of negative outcome and the problem of relative versus absolute risk; and (6) assessment of treatment impact.
