Recommended Revisions to Federal Mobile Home Construction and Safety Standard Resulting from the Structural Adhesive Durability Study: Task VI

This study set out to prove the adequacy of a test program which would demonstrate that structural adhesives used in mobile homes, are stronger and more durable than the adherends being bonded. If the adhesive is not stronger or more durable than the adherends for the expected useful life of the structure, the adhesive need not be rejected. The methodology provides for the determination of working design stresses for adhesives so that they may be treated as designable structural materials in their own right, similar to other mechanical fasteners. When adhesives are used in complex assemblies not lending themselves to a rational mathematical analysis, a performance test of the assembly may be desirable. The short - term results of assemblies must, however, be modified in such a way so as to provide structural integrity and durability of the structure's useful life when their performance is adhesive dependent.
