摘要

A walk through survey was made at the Hermann Oak Leather Company (SIC-3111), St. Louis, Missouri, for the purpose of investigating hazardous working conditions found at sites involved in the tanning of leather. The company began on its present site in 1881 and employed about 60 production workers processing exclusively heavy native steer hides. All hides were from domestic sources and were preserved by brine curing prior to receipt by the tannery. The tannery produced two type of finished leather, strap and skirting leather, both of which were vegetable tanned. Medical, industrial hygiene and safety programs were evaluated. Potential exposures were determined, and control measures used were determined. During the brief walk through survey there were no quantitative analyses performed regarding exposure levels, but there was a characteristic odor of ammonia (7664417) and acids noted by the investigators. The author recommends that a return visit be made to this site at a future time to take the necessary measurements to determine the efficacy of control techniques in use.
