Microbial Mutagenesis Testing of Substances; Compound Report: F76-058, Casein Hydrolysate

Compound F76-058 was tested in the Ames assay with Salmonella typhimurium strains TA1535, TA1537, TA1538, TA98, and TA100 and in the Escherichia coli WP2 (uvrA) assay. No increase in the number of revertant colonies was observed with S. typhimurium strain TA1537 or with E. coli WP2 (uvrA). With all four other strains the number of histidine-independent revertants was higher than that for the controls. Compound F76-058 was analyzed for the presence of histidine, which could give rise to the observed increases. The histidine determination assay revealed that histidine was present. The authors conclude that Compound F76-058 contains histidine which may account for the observed increases in the number of histidine-independent colonies. Because of this, the authors cannot unequivocally conclude whether Compound F76-058 is a mutagen or nonmutagen in the Salmonella/microsome assay.
