Evaluation and Improvement of Electrical Storm Warning Systems. Warning Parameter Study

The data acquired under phase 2 of the subject contract were analyzed to investigate whether the electric field strength and/or abrupt changes in the electric field could be used as device-independent parameters for a lightning warning safety specification. Although the data analyzed were device specific, the following conclusions were reached. A safety specification based upon an indication of atmospheric electrical activity within a predetermined radius of the site is viable and does not attempt to solve the difficult problem of estimating the location of the activity.
