Determinants of Labour Earnings in Developing Metropoli: Estimates from Bogota and Cali, Colombia

This study examines the patterns of behaviour implicit in the variation of labour earnings in Bogota and Cali, Colombia. The conventional earnings function is adapted to explore the heterogeneity which characterizes the urban labour market. Earnings equations for both male and female workers are developed incrementally, noting at each stage the independent effects of each set of explanatory variables. The returns to different levels of education are critically examined, while attempts are made to control for schooling quality and individual ability. The returns to firm-specific and occupation-specific experience are compared with the returns of general work experience. (Copyright (c) 1981 The World Bank 1818 H Street, N.W.
