Child Health and Human Development: An Evaluation and Assessment of the State of the Science

This project developed over 250 performance indicators for 162 research program objectives for NICHD's ten research programs. These objectives and performance indicators will provide the foundation for the scheduled full-scale evaluation of each of the Institute's ten programs. Each of the ten program areas was reviewed by a study group composed of an outside consultant expert in that field and a NICHD extramural program leader and, in most cases, a NICHD intramural leader in that field as well. An outside contractor was selected to support the work of the steering committee and the ten study groups. The individual program area study group reports were reviewed for scientific content by a standing research review committee or ad hoc review committee, and for policy content by the steering committee. The project's final reports include an evaluation and implementation plan, plus a state-of-the-science and research gaps and opportunities assessment, and program objectives and performance indicators for each of the Institute's ten research programs.
