摘要

In 1973, the newly launched National High Blood Pressure Education Program (NHBPEP) conducted a baseline survey of hypertension awareness, knowledge and self-reported behavior. The purpose of the survey was to set program objectives toward combating this condition through a nationwide public and professional education program. In 1979, a follow-up study was performed using a random sample of 5043 Americans to assess program progress and to assist the program in revising its objectives and program strategy. This report discusses in detail the answers to the more than 100 questions which were asked regarding high blood pressure. This summary provides an overview of the major findings relative to: attitudes; information sources; knowledge; hypertensives and their characteristics; screening, treatment, and compliance experience; the effect of hypertension on lifestyle; and family considerations.
