Highway Construction in Coastal Areas. Part V. Effect of Highway Construction on Ground Water Resources on the North Carolina Outer Banks

The Model 3 Computer Simulation was demonstrated to be successful in accurately predicting the water table elevations and depths of the salt water interface along the narrow barrier islands. Surface highway drainage configurations and the hydraulic conductivity of the soil were determined to have a slight effect on the groundwater aquifers along wide barrier islands. The most serious effect of highway drainage was determined when surface ditches penetrated to within approximately two feet of mean sea level.
