New Albany Shale Group of Illinois

The New Albany Shale Group (Middle Devonian-Kinderhookian) consists of an essentially continuous body of black, gray, and greenish-gray shales found throughout the Illinois Basin portions of Illinois, Indiana, and western Kentucky. The New Albany Shale Group is subdivided into nine formations in Illinois. At no single location in the state are all nine formations present and to some extent each formation grades laterally into one or more of the others.
