摘要

The Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted a review of fiber-reactive dyes having consumer applications and for which toxicity data were available. Reactive dyes are primarily used for dyeing and printing cellulosics, nylon, leather, and wool, and have been employed as histological stains and markers for fluorescence, visible light and electron microscopy. These dyes are not permitted for use in food, drugs, or cosmetics. The ease of application of fiber-reactive dyes has led to increased use by artists, craftspersons, and home dyers. Consumer use of these dyes is a cause for concern due to dermal, inhalation, and possibly oral exposures. Reactive dyes are capable of reacting with the body's tissues as well as with textile fibers, but only a small amount of toxicity data is available. The primary toxic effects of the 56 dyes reviewed are mutagenicity and allergic hypersensitivity.
