New ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Related Groups Classification Scheme. Volume V. MEDPAR Version of the New ICD-9-CM DRG Classification Scheme

Volume V documents the development of a MEDPAR version of the new ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Related Groups. This modification is a consequence of the limited elements available in the MEDPAR data set. MEDPAR is an annual 20% sample of Medicare hospital bills containing clinical data and billed charges for inpatient hospital care. The MEDPAR data set neither includes the specific secondary diagnoses nor defines discharge status more specifically than 'dead or alive'. Both secondary diagnoses and precise discharge status, however, are required in defining DRGs. Therefore, Volume V describes the adjustments made to the grouper tables when applying the classification scheme to MEDPAR data sets. The reader should be familiar with IBM OS Assembler, IBM OS Job Control Language and the ICD-9-CM coding scheme from a computer programming standpoint.
