Circulation Studies in the South Atlantic Bight with Prognostic and Diagnostic Numerical Models

A series of numerical experiments designed to simulate the three-dimensional circulation in the South Atlantic Bight and to explore some of the governing dynamics have been conducted. The experiments involve the use of the time-dependent, three-dimensional, sigma coordinate model developed by Blumberg and Mellor (1980 and 1981) modified to operate in both prognostic and diagnostic modes. The open lateral boundary conditions on velocity are computed from the use of a geostrophic-Ekman model applied to the region. Temperature and salinity on the boundaries are prescribed from hydrographic data. Circulations for typical winter and summer conditions are investigated.
