Requirements for Respirator Fit Testing in the OSHA Lead Standard

The applications of fit tests for evaluating respirator effectiveness in lead (7439921) contaminated atmospheres are reviewed. General respirator design and operating principles are discussed along with factors than can affect respiratory function, such as design, facial configuration, facial hair, and conditions of use. Guidelines for personal respiratory protection programs also are considered. OSHA guidelines for fit testing are provided, and the proposed qualitative fit test is compared to the required quantitative fit test statistically and using data sets provided by DuPont, 3M Company, and other chemical companies. The author concludes that quantitative fit test protocols are superior to qualitative fit test protocols, and should be required for initial respirator selection, fitting, and semiannual followup.
