A computer simulation model of water quantity and quality in Wahiawa Reservoir was developed and applied. The model represents the reservoir as a dynamic one-dimensional (vertical) system with emphasis placed on representation of vertical and temporal changes in water level, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen. A novel model feature is the inclusion of artificial aeration effects. Staistically-valid comparisons between simulated and observed water quality data over a one-year period were used for model calibration. The model was used to evaluate alternate water quality management strategies. Use of the model to predict effects of the strategies showed that anaerobic conditions depend on oxygen-demanding sediments and high algal productivity in surface waters.
