Influence of Shaft Length on Pile Load Capacity in Clays

This note describes analyses carried out to determine the effect of pile length on the load capacity of piles in clay. It is shown that, for long compressible piles, the load required to cause a head settlement of 10% of the pile diameter may be significantly less than the ultimate load capacity. A dimensionless solution is provided to enable rapid estimation of the combined effects of length and compressibility on the practical load capacity of a pile.
