Community Response to Alcohol Related Problems in Zambia. Chapter 1: Historical and Social Context

Results are presented from a study designed to examine the alcohol-related problems in Zambia, and the community responses to them. This study is part of an international project sponsored by the World Health Organization, to ascertain responses to alcohol-related problems in communities with different sociocultural standards. This report is divided into seven units, with the following contents: (1) historical and social context of Zambia; (2) research design and methodology; (3) patterns of drinking; (4) attitudes toward drinking; (5) prevalence of drinking problems; (6) existing forms of community responses to drinking; and (7) implications for a national plan to combat alcohol-related problems.
