Depth estimation algorithms and techniques employed in the post-flight data processing, reduction, and analysis computer programs for LIDAR bathymetry data from the NASA Airborne Oceanographic Lidar (AOL) system are described. The algorithms presented are empirical in nature and were developed over a period of time based on analysis requirements and on experiences with the particular characteristics of the experimental data from the AOL configuration. They may have limited significance for the evaluation of other systems.
