Earthquake Design Criteria for Water Supply and Wastewater Systems

Seismic phenomena are described and a procedure is given to ensure that water and sewage systems are functioning properly in the aftermath of an earthquake. Large displacements, ground failure, and seismic shaking of pipes are shown to be the three major causes of pipeline damage. The effects of different soil media in relation to seismic shaking and damage of pipeline failures are examined. Potential damage to water and sewage treatment facilities is explored and basic failure modes are viewed in relation to treatment plant facilities. The need for site planning and design strategies to decrease the seismic vulnerability of water and wastewater systems is emphasized.
